EMERGENCY!

Guys guys guys! I know I just posted, but I had a wonderful idea. For my sisters birthday (Sept. 18) I've decided I want to get her a typewriter. But, I don't know what to get her, so a list of questions are going to proceed this post, and answers would be very helpful!!

1. Do they even make typewriters for children?
2. If yes, what kind?
3. If no, are there smaller typewriters around somewhere? *coughclickthingcough*
4. Should I just get a regular typewriter? I mean, I might just end up being the only one using it anyway...
5. If that happens, what should I think of buying?

Oh oracles of typewriter wisdom, please guide me in my endeavor!

EDIT

Well, scouring eBay I've only come up with a few inexpensive choices. If only I had more money. :(

I nice blue Corsair here, a blue Parade here, and I'm probably going to skip the Sears only because the other two are much more attractive. And for being around $24, (hopefully it stays that way) I might be getting a better deal. Especially for something I like, since who knows if she'll actually use it.

Of course, it being eBay, something better for cheaper might jump up. That'd be great. Though, I should also check all the thrift and antique stores around town too.

Too bad they're not yellow.

How old is she? If she is old enough to already type a lot on computers and things, a portable typewriter like a Lettera 22 or a Skyriter would work great-- esp. if painted a cool color!

I know you're thinking small and light would be better for a child. But take my advice from having purchased a typewriter for my (then) ten-year-old grandson: a rugged, heavy boat-anchor of a typer is going to be more rugged. Kids will have innate issues with rough-handling of these sometimes delicate machines. You want something that will take the abuse. Something from the 1950-1960 age range; too much older and they can become delicate antiques, and too much newer and the build quality goes down hill.

She's eight. And yea, I was thinking lighter portable. I've half-way taught her that she doesn't need to slam the keys, but she does half the time. She especially likes bright colors, so if I can find one it probably won't matter what it is. I did find a nice blue Sears Citation, but I know nothing about the brand.

Either way, thanks for the advice!

The Sears Citations I've seen (online) are Smith-Coronas underneath their pretty plastic outsides. Good solid machines.

I'd second the notion of a heavy machine vs. a smaller one meant for "light duty" typing. Something like a S-C machine from the 50's if you can find them, although they're almost all poo brown.

Sarah - I did approve your comment, but it seems to have gone MIA. Strange. Either way, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's a hopeless romantic and should probably be shot for the ridiculous ideas that are to be had (like I Love You postcards on B&N.com).

clemens - it figures they'd all be ugly. I can be quite fond towards brown, but the little Miss wouldn't have it. Why is it so hard to find a nice colored, durable machine?
